To recognise World Alzheimer's Day the team at Four Oaks Care Home buried a time capsule in the garden

To recognise World Alzheimer's Day the team at Four Oaks Care Home buried a time capsule in the garden. Residents, staff and relatives wrote messages to put into the capsule for the finders to read in 30 years time. The capsule also included a covid test and a face mask to represent the recent pandemic, the front page of a newspaper from the day the capsule was buried, a list of current food prices, some photos of residents, some coins and a blue ribbon to represent the Alzheimer’s Society. 

Resident Maureen’s message for the capsule was “Use good manners, respect people and enjoy your life. Appreciate everything that you have.” 

Home Manager, Kean Mason’s message was, “Not all memories will be lost and each memory can be saved and passed on to the next person. The purpose of life is to learn and pass it on. 

This event brought the whole home together, sharing memories of the last year and what we think the future will hold. 

We held a small ceremony in our garden where one of our residents, Maureen Harrison, who has been a resident with us for the last year, was invited to place the capsule in the ground. Maureen even made a short speech about what she thinks of the staff at Four Oaks. To mark the spot where the capsule is buried, a planter has been placed over the top with a plaque to commemorate the date and acknowledge World Alzheimer’s Day. Another plaque will be added with the date we wish the capsule to be opened.
